Here are some pictures of the interior for Monograms A-26 Invader, that I've been working on. I used Eduard's Zoom set in the cokpit, and Quickboost's R2800 engines.
Here are a few pictures of the CMK cockpit painted up. Sorry, but I forgot to take a picture before I assembled the fuselage. The detail is quite nice, but it takes a bit of carving and sanding to get everything to fit.
The broke the resin instrument cover cutting it of the plug, and had to scratch build one out of sheet styrene.
The wheel wells are too shallow, so I cut out the molded in wells from the lower wing, and blocked in the wheel well. I still have to put in the reinforcing ribs.
Overall the fit has been ok. It needs a bit of filler here and there, but nothing major.
I can never build "out of the box." I always feel like I need to add extra detail, even if it's just adding some extra detail with strip and sheet styrene. The P-40 will be no different. The cockpit in the Academy kit is a little plane for me. Sometimes I'll scatchbuild the hole thing, and other times I'll pick up a detail set. I found a nice and reasonable cheep CMK cockpit set at Squadron. It's a very nice set and uses the right media for the appropriate parts. Photo-etch is limited to the instrument panel, and seat belts, and rest of the cockpit is made of resin. I hate phot-etch (it is my bane) and prefer to keep it to a minimum.
My local IPMS chapter (IPMS-DC) chose the Academy P-40 for this years build the same kit event. Since I married a Kiwi, I've decided to build the P-40N, as a RNZAF bird. I suppose that someone might build an Aussie bird, but I doubt there will be another Kiwi on the table! I found this Aeromaster set at Squadron, and it has markings for two different Kiwi P-40's. I've decided to model "Glory Lyons," although as a later model P-40N than is represented on the decal sheet.
I stumbled across an excellent site run by Peter Mossong, RNZAF Pacific WWII Homepage, that has tons of great information on modeling Kiwi aircraft in general, and also this particular aircraft.
